JAN. 19 – “The U.S. Army is reportedly building up stockpiles of missiles, armored vehicles, artillery shells and other equipment in Israel that the Israelis will be allowed to use in an emergency,” reports UPI, citing an article in the Washington-based Defense News weekly.

Gen. Petraeus to CNN: U.S. Has ‘Contingencies’ for Iran Nuclear Program

JAN. 10 – Gen. David Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command, has told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that the United States has developed contingency plans for dealing with Iran’s suspected program to develop nuclear weapons.

“It would be almost literally irresponsible if CENTCOM were not to have been thinking about the various ‘what ifs’ and to make plans for a whole variety of different contingencies,” said Petraeus, whose interview with Amanpour will air today.

According to the report, Petraeus declined to comment about Israel’s military capabilities, when asked about rumors that Israel could attack Iran’s facilities.

JAN. 8 – “We recognize what the potential could be there [Iran],” said U.S. Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, following a keynote address yesterday to a special Policy Forum at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “And at the same time, we’ve looked to do all we can to ensure that conflict doesn’t break out there while at the same time preparing forces, as we do for many contingencies that we understand might occur.”

While Ben Yishai notes that Israeli censorship forbids the publication of specific data pointing to the extent of Israel’s military readiness, the number of training hours and practice drills involving Israel’s air force “is virtually unprecedented.”
